Unified Theatre
During the summer of 2022, I interned at the Rock Ridge Performing Arts Broadway Bound Camp for children. I was paired with Connor, who has autism. If I had to describe Connor in one word, it would be joyful. He exudes joy to every person he meets, and his smile lights up a room.
Throughout the week, there were times when he got overstimulated and needed a break. Sometimes I could help him feel better by simply taking a walk around the school and grabbing a sip of water, while other times we would just sit in silence until he felt ready to go back into rehearsal. That week I learned what motivated him, what triggered him, what made him smile, and how to help him stay calm.
Although sometimes he got frustrated with me, he would shower me with hugs and blow me goodbye kisses at the end of the day. I discovered my passion for serving others by teaching.
During the 2022-2023 school year, I participated in a new elective called United Sound where we mentored special education students in music. All of the new musicians get to pick an instrument to learn and perform in a concert. This class became my motivation on days when I didn't feel like coming to school. The friendships that I have made in that class make my day better. Being able to provide the students with opportunities they wouldn't normally have is inspiring to watch.
This was the start of my passion to make arts accessible. For my capstone project, I worked with Katie Hudson, the Theatre Teacher at Broad Run High School (she's also Connor's mom!). I am helping her to cultivate a Unified Theatre curriculum for her class next year and leading introductory days with the special education program at Broad Run at the end of this year. We conducted two trial classes, and the school board came to observe me teach. This program is now being considered for implementation as an elective throughout the county.
I strongly believe in arts equity in education. I attended Loudoun County budget and school board meetings to advocate for internal equity and inclusion in arts education. Loudoun County became a leader in equitable funding for arts and sports education.
